the more loving one

I don’t know what it is about this poem that strikes me — I’m not even sure I particularly agree with it. But something about it rings such a beautiful note. And — truth and beauty, right, Keats?

Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast.

How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.

Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.

Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total dark sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.

A friend passed on this charming commercial made for Loewe.  Pretty impressive, especially considering that it comes amidst all  these  incredibly  delightful animated shorts I’ve been watching.

I confess to having an iTunes playlist designed specifically for music which I listen to while cooking (and sometimes also while enjoying the results on the balcony). One of my absolute favorites on this list is this litte song by Paolo Conte, an Italian singer who actually began his musical career as a vibraphone player.
